Ben auditions for a soup commercial and Joey comes along to try for a part as well. Things are going great until Joey gets paired with another child and it gets competitive. Joey has a little trouble with his line, however. Rachel starts her new job at Ralph Lauren; she soon feels left out because all the decisions get made on smoking breaks, and she doesn't smoke. She tries to solve the problem by taking up the habit; it doesn't work out too well, so she convinces her co-workers to quit... but that lasts about a day. Phoebe and Monica plan a surprise birthday party for Rachel. Monica, in her usual fashion, takes over completely, leaving Phoebe in charge of only cups and ice. Phoebe decides to make the most of it; she makes everything imaginable out of cups, and serves every kind of ice.
Ross: Seriously, that's a lot of cups.
Phoebe: Yeah well, that's 'cause I'm in charge of cups and ice, and Monica is gonna
rue the day that she put me in charge of cups and ice.
Chandler: You know, I rued the day once... didn't get a whole lot else done.
Joey: Hi, Ben! So, you wanna be an actor, huh? I gotta tell ya, it's no picnic. There's tons of rejection. No stability. I mean, one day you're Dr. Drake Ramoray, the next day you're eating ketchup right out of the bottle.
Joey: Uh-oh.
The Casting Director: Is there a problem?
Joey: Well, this is noodle soup and, uh, I've been working with tomato, so....
But it's okay, no problem. No problem. Mmm, noodle soup.
The Casting Director: You know, that's... that's fine, but the line is,
"Mmm, soup."
Joey: Oh. What did I say?
The Casting Director: Mmm, noodle soup.
Joey: How's that different?
Phoebe: Check it out! Cup hat; cup banner; cup chandelier; and the thing that started it all: The cup!
